YouTube is beginning to formalize how it handles one of the fastest-growing problems in online video: AI-generated replicas of real people. In mid-March, the platform expanded its policies around synthetic content, introducing new tools and enforcement mechanisms designed to give creators greater control over how their likeness is used.
The update builds on earlier efforts to address deepfakes but reflects a broader shift in approach. Rather than relying solely on takedown requests, YouTube is moving toward systems that can identify and manage AI-generated content at scale. The changes include expanded reporting options for creators and more detailed guidelines around what constitutes unauthorized use of a person’s voice or appearance.
The timing is not accidental. Over the past year, advances in generative AI have made it easier to produce convincing video and audio that mimic recognizable individuals. While some of this content is clearly labeled as parody or satire, other cases fall into a gray area that is more difficult to regulate.
